The Story Behind the Photograph

Photographed at the Giant’s Causeway on the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland, this image captures the final light of the evening as the sun settles just above the horizon and the Atlantic washes across the iconic basalt columns.

Taken at 7:13 pm on 9 April 2022, this photograph was originally part of a sequence of images intended to create a sunset time-lapse.

As you might expect at one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic locations, I wasn’t alone. I was there with a fellow photographer, alongside several other photographers who had also set up their tripods for sunset. Then there were two sunset chasers who had simply brought down a hot flask and settled in to enjoy the view — unfortunately, right in the middle of my wide-angle composition.

We waited for that dramatic afterglow and explosion of colour that landscape photographers are always hoping for. It never quite arrived. With people moving through the composition during the best of the evening light, the planned time-lapse didn’t work out either.

But sometimes a photography trip gives you something different from what you intended.

Looking back through the sequence, I discovered this frame — a brief moment when the scene was completely clear of people. A six-second exposure softened the movement of the Atlantic around the basalt rocks, while the setting sun remained just above the horizon.

The time-lapse may not have made the collection.
